Every Tuesday from 3-6 pm, Harlequin Beads & Jewelry hosts a beading circle where beaders can get together to share ideas, projects, materials, and good company. This artistic group of beaders creates some of the most amazing pieces and Harlequin is excited to share the beauty of their talents with you as the kick off stop for the February ArtWalk.

Passionflower presents the “Second Annual Objects of Desire” from February 4-28, 2011. This is a special collection of Artwork, Oddities and Treasures from the creative hands of Beverly Soasey, Betsy Wolfston, and Rogene Manas. Items may be taken after being purchased to accommodate gift giving for Valentine's Day. Expect the unexpected.

"The three of us really love the freedom of this show," says Beverly Soasey. "We can include everything and anything that we want, without having to stick to a format, style, theme, size or price range. It truly lets us run with scissors. It's is like having a huge studio sale at the coolest shop in town."

Beverly Soasey is the Director of the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene, a graphic designer, and artist. Her artwork falls in the category of mixed media/assemblage, which for her means, anything goes. It allows her collective nature, and love of travel and telling stories to come out through her art. Her work has been shown locally and in various places around the country. She occasionally teaches her technique, when her busy schedule allows it.

Betsy Wolfston has made her living as a professional ceramic artist for 20+ years. Her work can be found in many public art works in Oregon and Washington, and in galleries throughout the country. All of her work is hand-built one piece at a time. Her most recent public art work can be found at the Oregon Lane County US Forest/BLM/Armory Building.
Rogene Manas, mixed media artist and painter, calls herself a contemporary folk artist and shows her work at galleries in Eugene, Salem, and Portland. She teaches workshops in her unique techniques using paper maché clay and other paper materials. She was featured in a segment of Oregon Art Beat on
January 13, 2011, after her work was seen by they show's producers at a Portland gallery.

6:30 pm Goldworks Jewelry Art Studio (169 E Broadway)
Adam Murphy is the featured artist at Goldworks with his photography show “Violent Light.” He states, “Currently I am exploring interactions between machines and the body. This series studies a device made in the 1920s sometimes called a 'Violet Ray,’ or in the case of modern devices the 'Violet Wand.’ In this set of photos in particular I was attempting to capture the elegance of light and body, as well as the 'contact' of electricity with the skin.” Wine will be available from Stag Hollow Vineyards.

7:00 pm Imagine Gallery (35 E 8th Ave)
Imagine Gallery features "Happy Thoughts," a collection of new work by artist and co-owner Tym Mazet. These evocative original watercolors are eclectic, colorful, and whimsical. Inspired by life, and sometimes a bit nostalgic, peaceful, or just happy, little moments are captured and recreated in Tym's distinctive style.

7:30 pm No Shame Eugene Theatre (The Atrium Building at 99 West 10th Ave)
No Shame Eugene Theatre presents a rapid-fire series of original skits, monologues, poems, music, and the experimental. An antique darkroom timer sets the pace -- each act gets five minutes, then the lights go out! The show is free, and family friendly until you hear the Jaws theme. Live music and performer sign-in begins promptly at 7:30 PM. Performances at 8:00. ArtWalkers will also be able to view Cirque Nostalgique, a temporary art installation by the 12th Ave Collaborative in affiliation with Loose Canon Studio.

I am the new President of Oregon Mozart Players and I have a crazy idea for our action on the 24th of April this year and would like your input.
I would like to get one bottle of wine, any kind, from every winery in Oregon. This would be a feat indeed, but it would also be an amazing collection to auction off to raise money for our performances. Also, it would make the news among the performance community outside and inside Oregon in all the related web and paper publications.
I love to talk about our great wines when I travel and this would be something really cool to talk about!

Details about First Friday ArtWalk hosted stops, December 5th:

#1 New Zone Gallery - 164 W Broadway. The featured artist at New Zone this month is Merideth Ferrell. Her show, “My Passion is Color,” will be on display from Dec. 5th through Dec. 27th. Ferrell displays her luminous original silk paintings with new small framed silk hangings for the holidays, along with her luscious watercolors, and a first time showing of her expressive acrylic paintings. A special show celebrating a retrospective look at the life's work of local artist and scientist Will Klausmeier will run concurrently throughout the month. Also, New Zone’s Holiday Store will open Dec. 5th and stay open until Dec. 27th. A variety of original gifts created by New Zone artists will be available for sale.

#2 La Follette Gallery - 931 Oak St. La Follette is featuring the work of Jody Dunphy in a show called “Inherently Sacred.” According to Dunphy, “‘Inherently Sacred’ is a series of mixed media prints inspired by the sustaining relationship that nature has with humanity and the sacredness of this bond. The prints present an interconnected vision with the world of nature as a fully integrated ecosystem and as an inseparable part of our body systems. I communicate this holistic vision in my art through blending layers and blurring the lines between body/nature, micro/macro and sacred/mundane.”

#3 Fenario Gallery – 881 Willamette St. Local glass artist Mark Lammi will be presenting a series of mixed media installations in a show called “Intuition” that will incorporate his signature glass work. Lammi's glass pieces are a study of form and line, and his constructions offer diverse views of these influences. He is known for his deft handling and ability to create strikingly delicate goblet and vessel forms, often influenced by classic Venetian design. Lammi says, "As an artist I've found borosilicate glass to be a medium unlike any other. There is a quality of intimacy between the glass and the artist that I find incredibly appealing."

#4 Museum of Unfine Art - 537 Willamette St. The Museum of Unfine Art features the works of Shawn Mediaclast and Jeremy Covert. The show is entitled “Manic and Hyper-Realism.” Concerning his pieces, Jeremy Covert states, “The paintings have multiple layers of meanings. Each person brings their own set of these layers to the paintings. That is what I look for in an image. Something in daily life that can represent something more than what it actually is.” Don’t miss the work of these two artists!

#5 Blue Moon Jewelry - 115 W 6th Ave. Three Eugene metal smiths explore the endless possibilities of texture and how it relates to metal adornment. Tracey Bell, Margarita O'Brien, and Renee Ford each showcase different approaches to the same exploration. The show features works in copper, silver, gold, enamel glass on metal, and gemstones. Individual pieces are displayed as well as collaborative works from the three metal smiths. This show will run until January 1, 2009.

Fiber Art Process – Weaving and Surface Design Demonstrations. There will be an interactive weaving demonstration, form 1:00-4:00 PM on Saturday September 2nd. The demo will include looms, a spinning wheel, hand carders, and drop spindles. See how the fiber artist plays with color and yarns to create new materials and structure.

There will also be a demonstration of printing on the surface of cloth. We will provide cloth samples, or bring in a T-shirt. We will use the thermal imager and the heat press to create unique designs.

DIVA Marchers Wanted! Center volunteer Kristi Koons is organizing an entry for this year's Eugene Celebration parade on Saturday, September 13th, and she needs your happy feet to make it happen. The entry will center on a misting cauldron from which artist brewmasters will pull from the misting brew samples of art representing the diversity of DIVA's artistic talent. A cadre of marchers will be rapping a new song written just for the event.

Teen Video Summer Workshops at DIVA

DIVA's new Youth Visions program offers a series of July-August video workshops that provide the basic skills for teens wanting to make movies. Sessions start Tuesday, July 1st.
Teens will learn how to write stories that can be filmed and shared with others. Practice basic techniques for getting the best image and sound with available equipment. And, discover the secrets of making special effects with simple materials and a bit of imagination.
The workshops will be limited to 10 participants. Individual workshops are $40 each. A special package including all five workshops cost $150.

On July 4, 2008, the Lane Arts Council’s First Friday ArtWalk will be hosted by Douglas Beauchamp, the Executive Director of the Lane Arts Council. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes interviews with exhibiting artists at each stop.
#1 The Museum of Unfine Art - 537 Willamette St.

The Museum of Unfine Art and Record Store is proud to host two of Eugene’s most revered young artists. Scott Boyes was voted Best Local Artist by Eugene Weekly readers. He describes his fairly abstract work as consisting of Alien guys, skulletons, and lollitops. Claire Flint recently had an impressive show at the Jacob’s Gallery at the Hult Center. She is known for her iconic work, in which she explores religious iconography in modern ways. The show will be a crossroads between folk and fine art.
#2 Fenario - 881 Willamette St.

"Omens and Accidents" is the premiere solo gallery showing for local artist, Sarah Ciampa. Ciampa's evocative oil paintings explore the connectivity and quixotic nature of life through the concepts of "Omens and Accidents." Ciampa explains, "My work has come into being because of my belief and contemplation of these concepts. To me, all of the pieces for the show are in some way an outcome of these forces, and the whole body of work reflects these concepts in various ways. Life often seems to be a series of these two integrated, yet seemingly opposite, categorizations of experience. An accident implies a reality cobbled together by random, unrelated instances, where as an omen implies a meaningful connection between events." Ciampa's work explores psychological, physical, and emotional states and relationships with an often transcendental flavor. Vivid color highlighted by sensuous black backgrounds and gloss finish characterize much of her work. The mystery of both omen and accident are reflected in her often arcane treatment of subject and her style is variously organically abstract and realistic.
#3 Oregon Glass Guild – 174 W. Broadway

The Eugene chapter of the Oregon Glass Guild is hosting a “Diversity in Glass” Gallery show where one can view and purchase glass from many different local artists. The exhibited items include vases, bowls, jewelry, wall hangings, and many other art objects. Some of the artists displaying their works are Jo Ann Syron, Mary Hornig, Sue Bradley, Vicki Komori, Rhonda Farfan, Lee Beal, Kaye Johnston, Debbie McDaniel, and Josh McDaniel. Eugene is becoming known as a center for glass working in a variety of disciplines. Hence, the mission of the Glass Guild is to educate the public about the vast potential of glass artistry and methods of creation. There will be flame-working demonstrations throughout the show, which continues through July 6. Wine will be served on the ArtWalk.
#4 DIVA Gallery – 110 W. Broadway

DIVA is pleased to announce a special two-month exhibition in celebration of the Olympic Trials: "The Notion of Motion." The brainchild of local artists Tenold Peterson and Steven Oshatz, "The Notion of Motion" features a collaborative installation using acceleration and movement as a subject for visual expression. Featured in the main gallery are two large painted compositions of men and women running, reaching 8 feet high and 28 feet wide.
Also:
--Sergio Ortiz, a commercial photographer from Portland, exhibits striking large-format photographs of marathon runners.

--Don MacLane, a sculptor based in Portland, contributes a display of interactive kinetic sculpture, titled "Exploring Cycles." These steel and stone contraptions invite viewers to explore the variations that can arise in rhythmic motion patterns.

--DIVA's Members' Gallery features an exhibit by Leslie Terra, titled "Leafscapes & Garden Variety Portraits." Her larger than life drawings of the surface of leaves are vibrantly colored and, while quite accurate, verge on abstraction simply due to the large scale at which they are drawn. As a tie-in to the Olympic Trials, Terra has included a special section dedicated to native Oregon runners; the plants are, of course, growing in running shoes that have been turned into hanging pots.

Hannah's visit to Italy a year ago with her family inspired her creation of the pieces in this show. She had not expected to be so enthralled by the landscapes, buildings and environments that she saw. She took hundreds of photos with her simple digital camera. She shot ordinary scenes like the clothes line and the home in Ambra, magnificent scenes like the waterscape in Venice, and many photos depicting the magic of the towns in Cinque Terre. When she came home, She had a wonderful record of the richness of their trip. As she perused the images over and over, she felt the strong urge to recreate some of them in her medium-jewelry. She took two of the photos- the clothes line and the plates-thinking she wanted to make a piece of jewelry, she had no idea how she would do it and both pieces were difficult to do.

She chose her images and started working - Each piece took from 4-10 days. Some were very hard to figure out how to translate the feeling of the image into metal which was also wearable. She obsessed how to do the plates - until she found the watch crystals that she finally used. Some of the pieces are especially complicated. The pendant of Rioggiore has over 50 solder connections. The pieces were impossible for her to plan out - She worked without knowing how it would look or whether the whole piece would collapse at the minute. It was very tense and also rewarding. What occurred, which she had not expected, is that by making each piece, she became extremely involved in the image. She saw the parts and the whole of it as she hadn't before and that was thrilling. The whole experience of working on this show was more interesting and fun than she had ever expected.

The film has been adapted for stage twice: The 1945 adaptation by the Municipal Theater of St. Louis is the one most commonly done by community theatre companies. 4Culture and the King County Department of Transportation Bridge Division are seeking a United States artist as design team member on the South Park Bridge Replacement Project. The qualified applicant will have experience working in design team collaborations for large, transportation infrastructure projects and or specifically bridge projects, with additional experience working with Landmark structures. The selected artist will be asked to realize innovative solutions respectful of local historic context within a culturally and economically diverse community. The selected artist shall receive a Design Contract for $60,000. Upon proposal review and approval the artist shall be awarded a contract for Commissioned Artwork for $240,000 plus applicable construction credits.

The Andes Awakening. The show will be paintings by shamanic elder Luis Salinas
Quispe, of the Q'ero tribe in Peru, as well as ancient, sacred
textiles. The show is really beautiful, I included JPEGs of the
handbills to get you a taste of the art. The opening reception begins
at five, with wine, cheese and free beer provided by local Rogue
brewery! The show is a benefit to seed a living trust for the tribe to
provide food, medicine and identification papers for through the Q'ero
Longevity Foundation.

On Friday, June 6, 2008, the Lane Arts Council’s First Friday ArtWalk will be hosted by

Miriam Alexis Jordan of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m.

#1 Opus6ix – 767 Willamette St. Two artists have the spotlight at Opus6ix. Ellen Dittebrandt’s show “My Intimate View of Nature” explores her sense of awe and wonder through a series of striking images revealing the colors and vitality of nature. Her formal show ends on June 15^th, but her works will still be displayed in the gallery. Hannah Goldrich’s exhibition “Italian Images in Gold and Silver” will be showing from June 6^th to July 13^th. Jewelry she created in response to her travels in Italy will be displayed.
#2 Jacob’s Gallery – 7th and Willamette St. Jay Backstrand is the featured artist at the Jacob’s Gallery until July 12^th. His paintings have a seamless beauty with both classical and contemporary sensibilities, incorporating images of iconic and classical art history references with new motifs taken from our modern world. By juxtaposing and reconstructing images from a variety of cultures and art history, Jay’s paintings ask the question “What is beauty?” The show was curated by artist Craig Spilman.
#3 Blue Moon Jewelry– 6th and Olive Blue Moon Jewelry features the work of local metalsmith Nancy Piccioni. The exhibit introduces her current works in metal jewelry utilizing the ancient keum-bo technique of fusing metal.
#4 New Zone – 164 W Broadway The featured artist for June is Denise Steel. She will exhibit images related to sports, especially intriguing since it is concurrent with the Olympic track and field trials. In the 2^nd gallery room, there will be a special show focusing on the visual images and impressions of music and musicians. While listening to music, sometimes even to live musicians, the artists painted what they saw or felt. As a special treat, there will also be a demonstration of the interaction of musicians and artists.
#5 Harlequin Beads -- 1027 Willamette St. The featured artist is Nancy Gant, Eugene Lampwork Artist. Nancy says, “I tried a lot of different Arts over my years but glass is just way too fascinating to have ever walked away from. It gets your total focused attention because, with the flame, your work is alive and moving. It is beyond words and has become my passion.”
#6 La Follette – East Broadway and Oak Mason Williams, the comedy writer that wrote the Smothers Brothers show, has collaborated with Sheri Hoeger, a California-based stencilist to create this collection. The paintings on canvas are produced in a limited edition of 100, each piece accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. Also showing this month is the owner of La Follette Gallery, Cyndy Duerfeldt. She uses watercolors and acrylics to create images of predominant landscapes that carry an ethereal, moody theme.

Themes & motifs of the work of Nelson Sandgren

The Karin Clarke Gallery is proud to share the legacy of Nelson Sandgren’s art and spirit in this, the first exhibit of his work since he passed away in August of 2006. Curated by Karin and her father Mark Clarke, the show will include watercolors, several large oil paintings and some self portraits at varying stages of the artist’s life.

Born in Manitoba, Canada, in 1917, Sandgren grew up in Portland and Chicago. He received his art education at the Chicago Institute of Design, the University of Oregon, the University of Michoacan, Mexico, and earned both his B.A. and M.F.A. at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). After graduation in 1947, he joined the faculty there, and served as a professor until his retirement in 1987.

Nelson was greatly influenced by his teachers at the University of Oregon - David McCosh, Andrew Vincent and Jack Wilkinson, and although he did not study with her, Sandgren shared art philosophies with Maude Kerns in the later years of her life. In 1947 and 1948, Nelson studied with a second major influence in his work, Mexican muralist Alfredo Zalce, in Morelia, Michoacan. He became interested in creating larger scale paintings in collaboration with fellow artist friends. His public murals include those found at Mahlon Sweet Airport and the Lane County Court house in Eugene, Oregon, and also the Kerr Memorial Library at OSU, in Corvallis. He received numerous awards, grants and commissions during the course of his career, and exhibited in England, California, and Colorado, as well as Seattle and Portland.

A prolific artist, Sandgren spent four to five hours a day working in his studio, using oil, watercolor, and various print-making techniques. His unique brush work captures the essence of the environment in simplified, dynamic strokes. A sense of fearlessness, delight and reverence for the beauty of the natural world and the people in it, permeate his work.

Though Nelson traveled widely, his interest in the Oregon Coast never waned. He founded of a group of plein air painters, which, for a number of years, congregated at the beach in Bandon. His son, Erik Sandgren, carries on this tradition established by his father, with yearly coastal paint-outs, which continue to be a highlight in the experience of many local artists. Like his father, Erik is teacher, mentor and friend, who also helps many artists develop their skill and insight. On Saturday, June 7th, at 3:30 pm, Erik will give a talk about the themes and motifs of his father’s work, at Karin Clarke Gallery located at 760 Willamette Street, in Eugene.

boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing,
Grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.

We have noses that run and feet that smell.

We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.

And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

Allen Cox in OPUS6IX August Show

Allen Cox is a well-known Pacific Northwest abstract painter, a native Oregonian, currently residing in Knoxville, TN. Cox has been showing his work nationally since 1982 and held his first international exhibition in Christchurch, New Zealand in May 2003. He holds an MFA in painting from the University of Oregon, where he studied with Frank Okada. Allen Cox is represented by galleries in Eugene, OR,Portland, OR; San Francisco and Palm Desert, CA; Christchurch, New Zealand and Knoxville, TN.

Allen Cox's unique art finds its basis in 20th century abstraction, yet at the same time includes pictorial elements not usually accepted in pure abstraction. Cox feels such contradictions add to the complexity of his densely constructed images. These paintings also reflect his years of work as an archaeologist in Oregon. Multi-layered surfaces echo the stratified remnants of past events, for instance, while the abstracted reductive figures that often inhabit the work suggest meaning in much the same way as prehistoric pictographs operate.

Cox has been featured in New American Paintings: Artists of the West Coast and is the subject of an Oregon Public Broadcasting profile for the television program Oregon Art Beat. Cox and his work are currently featured in the book 100 Artists of the West Coast by Douglas Bullis, released in December 2003.His work is publised in "Nashville Living" 2006 Cox's paintings are found in numerous public and private collections across the US, as well as internationally.

Back to Back, a program of Community Alliance of Lane County (CALC), in collaboration with H.O.N.E.Y. (Honoring Our New Ethnic Youth), is developing a photo exhibit to highlight the multiracial experience in Lane County. The goal of this project is to raise awareness, acceptance and validation of the different experiences that people of mixed race and heritage have in Lane County. This new exhibit will counter
stereotyping by helping people recognize there are many different experiences in Lane County and will encourage people to be more accepting of their neighbors, co-workers, and classmates. The exhibit will comprise a wide range of subjects, with attention paid to diverse representation across race, age, and background.
This new exhibit is the third in a series that has been developed by CALC. All photo exhibits are lent to schools, agencies, colleges and universities, businesses, and other organizations to put on display in public areas such as libraries and lobbies.
Participants of ages, from infants to elders are being sought. All participants must live and/or work in Lane County. The application from is attached. Feel free to forward this announcement to others who may be interested.

Interesting day: people from Portland came in after a drive through the wineries and wanted to know why the other galleries were not open. They ended up buying some large work and some ceramics. They could have found both artists they bought in Portland but we were open...
CATS was at the Hult and we had scads of people looking for stuff to do before the show so we were busy.
I know it is hard to be open on Sunday but if we are going to become a destination for tourists we have to make that happen.

There was a meeting with the head of the Oregon Travel Council about signs for the Gallery and Arts District and they will be putting a sign out on the freeway at exit 94. We are seeking funding for follow signs leading in to EGAD!. Placement suggestions include with the Hult signs, and standalone. Plus we talked about banners. We are looking for a logo, perhaps a large G, to put in windows, or embed in the sidewalk to lead people around.

As much as I despise Bush and all who stand with him, I love America more. Each time I travel I find new and wonderful places that are worth the trip, but America always calls me home.
This is a poem done years ago in a very different time and for very different reasons but it rings like a liberty bell today. There is so much wrong with us now as a country ( a nation that tortures, invades other countries without provocation, has an idiot at the helm, and so much more), we need to see what is still good.

Lotte Streisinger will talk about her art and have two of her books that will be on sale. Her first book, From the Sidelines, is about the Institute of Molecular Biology at the UO, where her husband, George Streisinger, was a pioneering molecular biologist and co-founder of the Institute. It takes the reader behind the scenes as a scientific revolution unfolds.
The second book, The Potter and the Muse, is about her work as a long time potter and presents a lively, informative, and original discussion of the creative process illustrated through the medium of clay. It is based on Streisinger's studio notebooks and those she has been keeping about nature and travel.
Streisinger's exhibit "Arts and Letters" presents both her original prints and how Portland book designer, Chris Michel, manipulated these prints into book illustrations. Also on view will be a print series, "The Months," which the artist worked on while waiting for her second book to be published.

"The top U.S. military commander for the Middle East resigned Tuesday amid speculation about a rift over U.S. policy in Iran," the AP reports.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that Adm. William J. Fallon had asked for permission to retire and that Gates agreed. Gates said the decision, effective March 31, was entirely Fallon's and that Gates believed it was "the right thing to do."

Lane County Cultural Coalition is giving away $23,000+ during this cycle of grants. The money comes from money you give to the Oregon Cultural Trust by your donations to the Trust and from the purchase of the Cultural Trust License plates (which I am seeing more and more of!).

First Friday Strikes Again!

On March 7, 2008, the Lane Arts Council's First Friday ArtWalk will be hosted by Kari Westlund, the CEO and President of the Convention and Visitors Association of Lane County, Oregon. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at DIVA.

#1 DIVA Gallery - West Broadway and Olive. DIVA will feature exhibits containing punk art, linocut prints, nude photography, installations, stoneware, and mixed media. David Ensminger curated the show, which displays the works of Lottie Streisinger, Demetrius Gonzales, Adam Rupniewski, Renee Couture, Koka Filipovic, and Shirley Collins.

#2 Harlequin Beads - 10 th and Willamette. Harlequin has the works of Leah Fairbanks and Derek Lusk on display. The exhibit is called "Opal Illusions."

#3 La Follette Gallery -- East Broadway and Oak. La Follette is featuring the photography of Justin Williams this month. His exhibition is called "Images of Western Oregon."

#4 DNA Photographic, LLC - 8 th and West Park. Rick Maday of Eugene will be showing his collection of black & white and color, vintage portraits and pin-ups. Lisa Ann will be signing her new book "I Want to Buy a house - Where do I Start?".

#5 Opus6ix - 7 th and Willamette. Kirk Lybecker, Portland resident and Opus artist since 2006, unveils his distinctive airbrushed oil and watercolor paintings of the modern urban landscape in his newest exhibit. If an artist is defined by what they select as subjects for their creative expression, Lybecker is defined by ultra-realistic paintings of alleys, dumpsters, warehouses, storefronts and waiting rooms that comprise the commercial and industrial motifs of the modern urban environment.

#6 KLCC - 136 West 8th. Come celebrate the grand opening of the new KLCC building with us! This open house includes entertainment provided by Don Latarski in the new SELCO Performance Hall, including a live mini-concert. Light refreshments will be available. Also, staff will be on hand to give tours and answer questions about KLCC. Or, you could take a self-guided tour throughout the building any time during the Open House. Weekending in Portland

We spent Saturday lunching at Ten 01 at the corner of Tenth and Couch, seeing "The Beard of Avon",
walking up to Bay 13
for a visit with my good friend Joe, who also runs Paragon, then back to PCS (Portland Center Stage)for "Twelfth Night".
We took the Streetcar back to the Paramount hotel, had a nightcap, and tucked in for the night.
For those who think Eugene is a sleepy little town...let me tell you about Portland downtown! NOTHING opens before NOON!
After walking around hoping we would find something, perhaps the Museum?, a store?, anything?... we said "Screw this" and drove south. Stopping at the Tualatin Wildlife Refuge
and walking the mile or so out to the raised viewing area and watching a Bald Eagle preen and watch for fish gave us an appetite, (actually the walk BACK gave us the appetite).
In Dundee we chanced upon a very nice little eatery associated with Ponzi wines, The Bistro.
The lunch was great and the waitress got a huge tip by saying I looked TRIM! Pilate's pays off again!
Good to be home.

A Suburb Mandama Butterfly! Eugene Opera again surprises and pleases!Lacking a large voice, the evil bastard Pinkerton was a little out classed buy his wife Kelly Cae Hogan (real) and by all others save some of the locals.
The set by Carey Wong was brilliant as was the lighting by Micheal Peterson. The direction by Kelly Kuo was perfectly balanced between the potential overplaying chorus and the usual overpowering principles. The harmonious leveling of the two made it a seamless event.
Overall, the voicing was strong and the acting was far better than I have seen in Opera for a while.
Please support ALL local theater and arts, your life will be changed and you will have much more to talk about!

Back from Scottsdale

Scottsdale was quite an adventure. Played golf at Camelback in the rain, or what passes for rain down there. The locals were scurrying about trying to dodge the drops; some sort of Oz syndrome no doubt.
The resort, FireSky, was nice, new, and close to the galleries. The folks in the galleries were all very nice, low pressure, with one exception.
We went to the Scottsdale Performing Art Center and saw Hubbard Street Dance Theater. We also saw lots of names of groups that pass through Eugene at The Shedd.
The food was out of this world! Lon's at Hermosa, Elements at Camelback, and Digestif on the new Southbridge area, come to mind as ones to experience. We have just as good here in Eugene and we try to support the local restaurants but when in Rome...
Glad to be back.

Opera in Portland

Just returned from a pleasant little vacation in Portland. As usual, we stayed at Northrup Station, a kind of retro hip hotel with kitchens, two tvs,lots of purple and orange, great little conti breakfasts, up on 21st on the streetcar line and near some really fine restaurants including Wildwood.
Portland Opera did Rodelinda, the story line is: queen thinks king dead, refuses to marry new king, new king threatens to kill old kings son, queen says ok I will marry you, but only if you kill my son...now it starts to get confusing. Old king comes back (not dead) hides and watches wife betray him by agreeing to marry new king, reveals himself, tossed in prison, escapes with the help of the help, who he stabs by accident, challenges new king to duel, last part mostly singing the same thing over and over for the better part of 20 minutes while wandering around the stage hugging wife, pointing sword at new, now old king, hugging son, shaking hands with stabee, hugging sister (who has hots for new/old king) repeat at least 5 times, bow. I stayed awake! Even after we had a very big dinner at Morton's, where they bring the cow out and you draw with magic marker the part you want.(vague reference to Restaurant at the End of the Universe). After the third half of the opera was over we returned to Morton's for desert and really old scotch.
The next morning required a visit to Rose's for a BIG breakfast. I had the BISCUITS AND GRAVY, with eggs, ham, and hash browns. Oh boy was it good!
We ended the day walking around the garden and patio show at the convention center. There we found an umbrella with lights, an Ipod port, speakers, and enough big to cover a small house. Needless to say, we bought it (sans Ipod port and speakers) one has to draw the line SOMEWHERE!
All in all a great escape. Nice to be back in Eugene.

Today on my way back from Pilates I was hit with a sudden urge for GELATO! Mitch at Perugino make the best I have ever tasted and that includes what they serve at the Eiscafe Bellini in Garmisch ,the shop outside St Mark's , La Boutique del Gelato
or the little shop in Worms Germany where I had my very first taste in 1975.
There is NOTHING as good for that first taste of cold, rich flavor!

Last night we saw near perfection on stage at Willamette Rep! The four very different and equally talented actors, perfect direction, a set that became very real and solid , lighting that let us feel the chill of the Chicago fall, along with costumes, sound, and everything that makes a play, made this play great!
Few times have I lept to my feet and been swept up in thundering applause as I was last night!
Proof made us laugh, cry, and think.
If you see nothing else this season, you MUST see "Proof"!

New Zone “Three Views of Digital Diversity”

The New Zone Artist Collective is proud to announce a new exhibit featuring three renowned Oregon artists specializing in digital fine art genre. This exhibit, entitled “Three Views of Digital Diversity” will showcase the work of Paula Goodbar, Dominic DeFazio, and William Kasper. The New Zone Gallery, located at 164 W. Broadway in the heart of Eugene’s Downtown Gallery District, will also be exhibiting work from other members of the collective.

The gallery exhibit will run through Saturday, February 23, 2008. This is the first in a series of exhibits celebrating the 25th anniversary of the New Zone Artist Collective, and special events will be announced throughout the year.

Robert Schlegel Paintings Exhibited in the Governor's Office

An exhibition of acrylic paintings by Banks, Oregon artist Robert Schlegel is on display in the office of Governor Ted Kulongoski through March 14, 2008. The paintings of structures, landscape and wildlife make masterful use of a bold, earthy color palette.

An avid drawer, Robert Schlegel's oil and acrylic paintings often begin as charcoal studies of line and shape. Says the artist: "The interaction of shape, contrast and line are what stimulate thought and cause me to transform these forms into images in paintings, collage and prints. Of particular interest to me are structures that are juxtaposed into landscape. I strive to create images that possess tension between the representational and the abstract."

Schlegel's work is represented in the collections of the Visual Chronicle of Portland, Umpqua Bank, Oregon State University, US Bank, and Willamette University, and has been exhibited throughout Oregon and beyond, including the Portland Art Museum; University of Oregon; Coos Art Museum; Clatsop Community College; Karin Clarke Gallery, Eugene, OR; Rogue Community College; White Bird Gallery in Cannon Beach and the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, Salem. He holds a BA from Willamette University and an MS from Portland State University.

The Art in the Governor's Office Program honors selected Oregon artists with exhibitions in the reception area of the Governor's Office in the State Capitol. The program considers only professional, living Oregon artists, and an exhibit in the Governor's office is considered a lifetime honor. Artists whose work has been shown there include Gordon Gilkey, Yuji Hiratsuka, Manuel Izquierdo, James Lavadour, Henk Pander, Michele Russo and Margot Thompson.

The Oregon Arts Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department in 1993 in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities. In 2003, the Oregon Legislature moved the operations of the Oregon Cultural Trust to the Arts Commission, streamlining operations and making use of the Commission's expertise in grantmaking, arts and cultural information and community cultural development.

The Arts Commission is supported with General Funds appropriated by the Oregon Legislature, federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and funds from the Oregon Cultural Trust.

First Friday February 1st 2008: over 400 people braved the cool night air and the threat of rain to visit the Gallery District and visit the galleries.
Robert Melnick and Larry Fong from The Jordan Schnitzer Museum came down and met Kirk Lybecker at OPUS6IX and thanked him for his gift of a painting to the permanent collection.
Mood Area 52 played at Perugino.
All the galleries were buzzing and sales were good despite the fact that bush is still President.
